Materials
- 2 clear glasses
- Water
- 2 raw eggs
- Salt (about 8 tablespoons)
- Spoon
Instructions
- Fill both glasses about three-quarters full with water.
- Carefully place the egg into the first glass of plain water. Observe what happens. The egg will sink to the bottom.
- In the second glass, add about 8 tablespoons of salt to the water.
- Stir until as much of the salt as possible dissolves.
- Gently place the egg into the salt water. The egg now floats!
What’s going on?
- An egg sinks in plain water because it is denser than water. When salt is dissolved in water, the density of the water increases. Salt water is dense enough to push upward on the egg with more force, allowing it to float. The egg does not change. Only the density of the water changes.
