Materials
- Hard-boiled egg, peeled
- Glass bottle with an opening slightly smaller than the egg
- Matches or lighter (adult supervision required)
- Small strip of paper
Instructions
- Make sure the peeled egg can sit on top of the bottle opening without falling in.
- Light the paper and drop it into the bottle.
- Quickly place the egg on the bottle opening, narrow end down.
- Watch what happens as the egg is pulled into the bottle!
What’s going on?
- The burning paper heats the air inside the bottle, causing it to expand and some of it to escape. When the flame goes out, the air inside the bottle cools, lowering the air pressure inside the bottle.
- The higher air pressure outside the bottle then pushes the egg into the bottle. The egg acts like a seal, so it is forced inward as the pressure equalizes.
